What is a Humulin® N KwikPen?
Humulin N is a slow-acting insulin that lasts longer than regular human insulin that is available for diabetes patients in two forms: Humulin N U-100 vial or the Humulin® N KwikPen®.
This insulin pen is used by adults with diabetes in order to effectively manage blood sugar levels and avoid diabetes-related complications.
Insulin should only be part of a treatment program along with a proper diet, exercise, weight loss program, blood sugar testing and special care. Follow instructions provided by your doctor closely to see best results.
The Humulin N KwikPen is a single-patient-use prefilled pen that contains 300 units of Humulin N intermediate-acting insulin.
With the click of the dose knob dial, you can deliver 1 unit of insulin. Patients can administer between 1-60 units of insulin from a single injection. If your dose requires more than 60 units, you’ll have to inject yourself more than once.
Humulin N is to be injected under the skin (subcutaneously) and should not be injected into a vein or muscle.
This medication should only be taken under the direction of a medical expert. Before taking be sure to get an understanding by reading the instructions for use and have fully understood your doctors directions.

Humulin N KwikPen Usage Instructions
This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed and according to the guidance of your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use longer than needed or in smaller or larger amounts.
It’s recommended to follow directions on prescription label and read medication guides and instruction sheets associated with the Humulin N KwikPen.
Do not share Humulin N KwikPen with others as this can lead to spreading infection and disease. Even if the needle has been changed.
Let your doctor know if you have any pre-existing conditions, especially if you have heart, liver or kidney disease.
Action typically starts to take effect a few hours after injection.
As mentioned, Humulin N KwikPens (insulin isophane) should be injected under the skin. To properly administer insulin:
- gently roll the pen in the palm of your hands to mix the insulin
- with an alcohol swab, clean the tip of the pen and attach a needle
- clean the site of injection with a alcohol swab
- pinch the skin into a fold (pinching may not be necessary for short needles)
- inject the insulin
Rotate injection sites every few days to avoid skin complications from happening to the same injection site.
Keep pen at room at room temperature for up to 28 days and discard after medication has expired.
Unopened pens can be stored in a refrigerator.
Check your blood sugar regularly using a blood sugar monitoring system or appropriate device.
A healthcare provider, doctor or nurse should teach you how to properly administer the medication by yourself.
It should not be given with an insulin pump or mixed with other insulin. Do not inject directly into a muscle or vein.
Do not inject into damaged skin that is bruised, pitted, thickened, tender, scaly, scarred or lumpy.
Insulin should appear cloudy after mixing. Do not use if the medication looks clear or contains particles. If it does, contact your pharmacist or doctor for a new one.
Do not transfer insulin from pen to syringe. Only use the injection pen that comes with the insulin isophane. Attache a new needle before each use.
A glucagon kit my be prescribed by your doctor in case of hypoglycemia. Be sure your friends and family understand how to inject it in case of emergency.
Watch for signs of hyperglycemia such as frequent urination and increased thirst.
Blood sugar levels can also be affected by illness, exercise, surgery, stress, alcohol use or skipping meals. Speak to your doctor before changing your dose or medication schedule.
Keep medication away from heat or light.
Do not freeze insulin or store near a cooling element

Unopened insulin (not in use):
- Refrigerate until expiry date has been reached [Below 30°C (86°F)]
- Store at room temperature
Opened insulin (in use)
- Humulin Pens should not be refrigerated but stored at room temperature
- Throw away any medication that is not used before time of expiration
Humulin N Pen currently in use should be discarded after 2 weeks, even if they still contain insulin.
Follow local or state laws when properly disposing of unused medication. Used needles and syringes should be disposed of using a puncture-proof “sharps” container.
Keep out of reach from children or pets.
Wear medical identification such as a bracelet or card in your wallet in case of emergency.
Warnings & Precautions
Insulin users should be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar, which include confusion, headache, hunger, irritability, palpitations, rapid breathing, cold sweats and shakiness. These symptoms require immediate treatment, to bring your blood sugar back up to a safe level. This can be done with a quick source of sugar, such as 3 glucose tablets, a tablespoon of jam or honey, 6 to 8 jellybeans or LifeSavers, a tablespoon of sugar, or 1/2 – 3/4 cup of non-diet soft drink. Inform your doctor if these symptoms have occurred, as it may mean that your diet and/or medication needs to be adjusted.
Dispose of used syringes and needles safely. Your pharmacist can tell you the best way to do this. In order not to cause hypoglycemia, avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Do not drink alcohol on an empty stomach.
Complications may occur as a result of interacting with other medications. Let our doctor know what medications you are currently taking, which should include: vitamins, herbal remedies, supplements, over-the-counter and other prescription medication.
Also, inform your doctor if:
- you have any other medical conditions
- whether you smoke and for women
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have allergies to medications
- if you have ever had kidney
- low levels of potassium
- if you take pioglitazone or rosiglitazone
- taking any oral medications
Insulin should not be given to children, unless under the direction of a doctor.
Managing diabetes during pregnancy is very important. Having high blood sugar can affect both mother and baby. Be sure to tell your doctor and follow their instructions on insulin use carefully.
Side effects related to insulin can happen. However, most side effects are rare, it’s important to understand them and how to detect symptoms.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is the most common symptom which can include:
- shortness of breath
- rapid breathing
- cold sweats
If this happens you will need to take necessary action. This should include taking a glucose tablet, hard candy or sugary drink to restore blood sugar levels. If this happens, let your doctor know as they may want to adjust your medication.
In addition to hypoglycemia, this prefilled insulin pen has very few side effects.
If you experience any allergy symptoms after injection get medical help. Allergy symptoms may include:
- skin rash over the entire body
- redness or swelling at site of injection
- trouble breathing
- tight chest
- feeling like you may pass out
- swelling of throat or tongue
- hollowing or thickening of skin at injection site
Contact your doctor immediately if you have the following symptoms:
- fluid retention
- weight gain
- swelling of hands and feet
- shortness of breath
- irregular heartbeat
- low potassium
- numbness or tingling
- increased urination
- limp feeling or muscle weakness
